As the public health emergency continues to increase, the threat of child abuse and maltreatment also rises. Carousel’s Team remains vigilant in advocacy for our children who may be suffering in silence because the person hurting them is also a part of their family… but there’s no school, no after-school care, nor child care services to recognize the signs of abuse and report it during COVID-19 Shelter In Place Orders. Economic turmoil, natural disasters, and pandemics all increase the sometimes overwhelming levels of stress and anxiety in society. Families may be overwhelmed by more stress from job loss, financial hardships, and greater lack of basic needs like food, medications, needed support services. We know this will mean we will see more children coming through the doors in the months to come. Carousel’s dedicated forensic/medical and family advocacy professionals mobilize with our DSS and Law Enforcement Investigators to serve those children who are reportedly experiencing abuse and/or neglect right now – in their homes – with perhaps no one to tell. This Multi-Disciplinary Team of child abuse intervention warriors continues to provide comprehensive child forensic interviews and medical evaluations. Carousel’s Trauma Therapists maintain connection, support and continue the hard work of healing with children and families via TeleMed therapy sessions and phone contacts, working daily to ensure that any unmet needs are handled.

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month! We can’t wait to see your fabulous (or ugliest) ties for TIE ONE TO END ABUSE on Wednesday, April 22nd. The United States has one of the worst records for child abuse among industrialized nations. We cannot change this without raising awareness and encouraging more people to be part of the solution. Challenge you to wear an ugly tie to help raise awareness for child abuse!
